Wings over Zürich

Would you make a great Photo Detective? You can test your skills against those of your friends by setting up a little competition – and what better picture to start with than this dramatic double image?

Zürich Airport is unusual in allowing visitors to get so close to the runways, and therefore enabling our photographer to get this exciting shot, as a Germanwings jet takes off almost over the head of a passer-by. Germanwings is a low cost German airline, in fact owned by the national carrier, Lufthansa, and based in Köln (Cologne). Its 90 planes also fly out of Tegel Airport in Berlin, as well as Bonn, Hamburg, Hannover, Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Stuttgart airports.

In 2015 the airline became world famous in a bad way when a 27 year old co-pilot deliberately crashed an airbus in the south of France, perhaps because of depression and suicidal tendencies. 144 passengers and 6 crew died. Since then Germanwings has operated under the name of its sister airline, Eurowings, making this photo rather rare in future.
