Pneu Egger

Language non-issue

This picture of a Swiss car tyre and automotive parts shop, taken for the purpose of the game of finding differences between the images, happens to illustrate neatly the cosmoplitan nature of language use in Switzerland. This is the German-speaking part of that land-locked, neutral country, yet the word ‘pneu’ is the French word for ‘tyre’ : in Germany the word ‘Reifen’ would be used for a car tyre. However in German-speaking Switzerland, where both major European languages are very familiar, the use of a French word in a German context causes no problem at all, and is probably not even noticed by most people.
