Swiss rural architecture

This picture was taken in the countryside in central Switzerland, and makes a suitable image for our photo observation game. Due to the climate, the typical features to note are large, strong and steep roofs, which overhang to shelter the walls. These roofs have to be able to hold the weight of snow, and they are designed to prevent snow from piling up against the walls. A lot of use is made of timber, which doesn’t readily conduct heat away. Throughout Switzerland you will find examples of the world famous “Swiss chalet” style of design, with a lot of decoration on the timber framed buildings. In the countryside, many farm houses included space under the same roof to keep animals: in a country that has a lot of snow and electric storms it makes sense to keep your animals close by, so you do not have to go far to tend them.
