Laughing Buddha

In popular western culture the Buddha is often portrayed as a fat man laughing. In this case I photographed him seated outside a Mongolian restaurant called Han, in my home town of Zug in central Switzerland. Presumably the message is that you will enjoy eating here, so why not come in and be happy? Surprisingly, although the main religion in Mongolia these days is Tibetan Buddhism, the Mongolian Barbecue on offer at Han includes a lot of meat. The answer is that the Buddha did not forbid his disciples to eat meat, and plenty of Buddhists think that as long as you do not kill the animal yourself or cause it suffering, it is all right to eat meat.
