It’s a natural human instinct not to want to be alone, and time spent with friends is precious, even if you are not doing anything special, but just “hanging out”. In the early stages of a friendship you may feel the need to plan activities and to talk all the time, but as the friendship develops and becomes deeper, silences can be tolerated more easily, and the need to join in a planned activity lessens. The old joke, attributed to American author Ethel Watts Mumford, “God gives us our relatives, thank God we can choose our friends” is only a slightly cynical truth – most people seem to find friends that suit them, and anyone who has no friends is likely to be an object of pity.
