De Havilland Seaplane

A single-engine de Havilland Beaver seaplane, in colourful livery, makes a good subject in our just-for-fun photo competition. The picture was taken from the shore of Lake Lucerne, quite near the Lido in Lucerne city, in May 2013.

It was back in 1920, in north London, that Geoffrey de Havilland first established his aircraft building business, one of his early successes being the revolutionary biplane ‘Moth’. His company went on to build the Mosquito bomber in World War 2, and later the pioneering passenger jet, the Comet. De Havilland is now part of BAE Systems plc. There is a subsidiary company in Canada, where the seaplanes are widely used.
