Garbage men

Garbage, rubbish, trash or waste…

In our modern consumer society, keeping the streets clear of unwanted waste is a full time job. This photograph, taken in Switzerland, shows one solution, which is to collect waste destined for landfill from the roadside, compress it in the truck and then transport it to the landfill site. Most governments and councils these days combine this with recycling, collecting recyclable material separately, and incinerating appropriate types of rubbish to produce electricity from the heat generated. The American poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti constructed a thought provoking poem called ‘Two scavengers in a truck, two beautiful people in a Mercedes’, set in San Francisco, as a way of highlighting inequalities in Western society. It’s worth reading.
