The butterflies in the picture are in the 3rd and most glamorous phase of their brief, four-part lives. The first stage is as an egg, which the adult butterfly lays ready on the plant which will provide food for the offspring it will never see. Next is the caterpillar or larvae stage, during which the larva’s job is to eat as much as it possibly can, sometimes making it the enemy of gardeners. Once the larva is fully developed, the 3rd phase involves time spent as a chrysalis or ‘pupa’, before the adult butterfly enjoys its brief period of mating and the cycle begins all over again with egg-laying.
