Kite Surfing

Kite surfers prepare their kites on the shores of Lake Zug in Switzerland.
This is a fairly new extreme sport (suitable equipment has only really been available since 1999) which has quickly become popular, with an estimated 1.5 million participants worldwide. The sport is due to be named an official event at the Youth Olympics in 2018. It includes various types of competition such as freestyle, speed course racing, and jumping. The longest journey by kite surfer was 3,500 miles (5,600km) across the Atlantic Ocean by a team of six, and took almost a month in 2013. The longest solo journey was a 1,243 mile (2,000km) sail by Louis Tapper off the coast of Brazil. It took him over 24 days and he did it without support.
By contrast, the kite surfers in the photograph are probably just doing the sport for fun.
