La Scala, Milan (Teatro alla Scala)

 La Scala opera house in Milan, first opened in 1788 after a fire had destroyed the previous theatre in 1776. It is still one of the most famous and prestigious venues for opera in the world, and every ambitious opera singer, ballet dancer and conductor should want to perform here. Among those who have been principal conductor are Toscanini, Giulini and Barenboim. La Scala was completely and controversially renovated between 2002 and 2004 by architect Mario Botta.
