Old railway carriages, Furka

The Cogwheel Steam Railway over the Furka Pass is one of the most historic railway journeys in Switzerland. First opened in 1925, the railway closed in 1982 when a base tunnel made the mountain route unnecessary. It re-opened in 1992 under new owner-operators. Original carriages like those in this photograph again take passengers up to the 2,160 metres (7,086 feet) high Furka station, passing the Rhône Glacier.
