Knocking the Goose down (Gansabhauet)

A traditional ceremony held on 11th November in the town of Sursee in rural Switzerland gives boys the chance to cut down a dead goose with a blunt sabre. This custom is believed to have started in or before 1821, and seen here in the photograph is the costume that competitors wear: a long red robe and a sun mask, under which they are blindfolded, making it a game of chance as much as a test of skill.
