Ämpächli, Elm

Aempaechli, Elm, Switzerland

The village and ski resort of Elm is in the valley of the River Semf in the Swiss canton of Glarus; it was once an area of slate quarrying and cattle farming, but now tourism is important in its economy. A gondola now takes hikers and skiiers up to Aempaechli from Elm, and visitors can hire ‘monster scooters’ to ride down from the top station to the village in 15 minutes. The route is traffic free and suitable for children. You can also rent ‘mountaincarts’ (a cross between a kart and a toboggan) to take a 4 km (2.5 mile) ride on a special track. Again this is aimed at families and children as young as 12 can drive.
