Hong Kong

This photo of Hong Kong is a reminder of several ways in which that fascinating city is unique in the world. Firstly, as an Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, this former British colony occupies a strange political space between East and West: it is autonomous but dependent, free but not free, capitalist but Communist.
Secondly, having only 1,104 sq km (426 sq miles) into which to fit 7.2 million people, Hong Kong has been forced to build higher and higher, sometimes even pulling down perfectly good modern buildings in order to be able to build more storeys onto their footprints.
