The alphorn

Part of a group of alphorn players, assembled in the Landsgemeindeplatz in the Swiss town of Zug. The alphorn was traditionally used by farmers to call the cows in from the pasture for milking, and has since become effectively the Swiss national instrument and even a symbol of Switzerland. Instruments of different lengths play in a different key: the F sharp / G flat horn, for example, is 3.5 metres (11.5 feet) long. Where you are likely to hear the alphorn is at the Swiss Yodelling Festival or at parades by the Swiss Association for Traditional Costume; then there is always the annual alphorn festival in Nendaz.
