Colonizing began in 1776. Discovery of gold in 1848. Railroad from Atlantic to Pacific arrives in San Francisco in 1869. Earthquake 1906. One of the most attractive U.S. cities. Population: 800'000 (6,5 million in the Bay Area).

On of the world's most beatiful bridges. The bridge was completed in may 1937. Total length: 1,7 miles (2,7 km), width: 90 ft (27 m), clearance above water: 220 ft (67 m).
Golden Gate Bridge is part of the U.S. Highway 101. Tolls are collected in the southbound direction.

Andrew Hilladie was the driving force behind the cable car system. 1873 the first line starts public service.1947 attempt to close down the cable car system. The Citizen's Comitee to save the cable cars began a petition. In a voting the City of San Francisco was forced to maintain the Powell Street cable car system.
